Regional Citizens Join Tens Of Thousands World Wide To Call For An End To The Occupation Of Iraq
Iraqi and American Dead And Displaced Mourned On Five Year Anniversary Of Invasion
(Tampa Bay) Veterans, military family members, activists, clergy,
and citizens of all political persuasions will be gathering at
demonstrations outside of Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite's Brooksville and Sen.
Bill Nelson's Tampa offices, mourning the death and suffering caused by
the US occupation, and calling for it's immediate end. This is
part of a world wide call to action which will feature hundreds of
demonstrations around the globe.
The US aggression in Iraq has now lasted longer than the combat
operations in World War I, World War II, Korea, or the first Gulf War,
and the total cost -- conservatively estimated at close to $2 trillion
when long term veterans benefits costs, lost productivity, and
increased energy prices are factored in -- make this by far the most
costly military action in the nation's history.
"The ramifications of this tragic foreign policy blunder are already
worse than Viet Nam," says Viet Nam vet and 27 year police officer Don
McKeating. "This debacle has pushed our military to the breaking point
from a personnel and hardware standpoint, and the cost in human lives
-- both American and Iraqi -- suffering, and national treasure is
unacceptable."
"The human cost of the war and occupation of Iraq is immeasurable; Up
to a million Iraqi’s have died, five million children have been
orphaned, and more than four million Iraqi’s are living as
refugees. This war has further destabilized the Middle East and is
bankrupting America. It is time to bring all of our troops home and
give the nation of Iraq back to the people of Iraq," said Bettejo
Indelicato of Hernando County, who lived in Baghdad during the invasion
and occupation of Iraq and is one of the founding members of the
Florida Peace Action Network.
"Using the guise of democracy, along with the "war on terror"
moniker, we have unleashed destruction, torture, deceit, graft,
corruption and death in Iraq, and a frightening loss of civil liberties
here at home, "says Samm Simpson, candidate for Congress in
Florida's 10th District, currently represented by pro-war Republican
Congressman "Bill" C.W. Young. "With the carnage and displacement
that's already happened, there can be no victory. A war built on
lies cannot be made right through occupation and the buying of tribal
support. Over 70% of Americans, along with the larger world
community, are waiting for America to return to a land of compassion,
peace and justice. It is past time to change direction."
Participating organizations in the Tampa Bay area actions include
Florida's Progressive Democrats Of America, Florida Peace Action
Network, Florida ANSWER, Florida Code Pink, Florida Military Families
Speak Out, St. Pete For Peace, and others.
